Just thought I would double check with everyone that the forward and reverse gears are reversible on these gearboxes. It?s just that the reverse gear is a lot cheaper and why spend more than you have to .I already have a worn-out forward gear and was hoping to just swap over the bush into a new reverse gear .The original reverse gear shows signs of wear so I'm not going to use this even if it?s possible to just swap the gears over

Regards Kevin

Not knowing your actual engine setup, I can't say for absolute certain but mine is a 1976 40HP Johnson and yes I can swap the two gears around. BUT, I have a difference in ratios. It isn't much difference but will change the RPMs with the prop I use. So you probably can, but may get slower top speed. But a little more lower pulling power...

No , no ----There is no difference in gear ratio between reverse and forward on these.

racerone, maybe for his OB but for mine there certainly IS a difference in gear ratios. I can count the teeth difference and the part numbers will verify that. My actual Johnson shop manual also states the different ratios with my OB. However, he could use that to verify that his will work though. Check the actual part numbers to verify...

As "racerone" states... the gears are identical excepting that the forward gear has a pressed in bushing. Swap'em.

racerone and Joe Reeves, I'm not going to argue with you guys because I do respect both your opinion's and knowledge and because I'm certain you both know way more about OB's then I'll ever know! But the part numbers for my two gears are different and the prices are hugely different too. The forward gear is listed as P/N 0381810 at $323.99 and the reverse gear is P/N 0312869 at $80.00. So for my 1976 Johnson 40HP OB I see a difference. All I was saying was they could be different for his too...not that his were, but that mine IS! :peace:

The gears are the same !!---------One has a bushing pressed in and one has a " full floating " bushing that just slides in.-------There is more demand for the forward assembly and thus the difference in price.----Price today is affected by demand and cost of storage space in a wharehouse.----Just picked up 2-- 90 HP motor blocks for about 10% of the original cost for that reason alone !--------When these parts are priced at even numbers like $80.00 instead of $81.67 it is a " fire sale " price , to get more wharehouse space !

racerone, honestly, thanks for your reply and your time straightening me out. I learned something new today. I will remember that for future usage for sure. I was merely going by the part numbers and I even researched my Johnson shop manual to reread it for the ratio(s). They do specify the forward ration of 12.21 but not the reverse. So I don't know where I read the difference in forward and reserve now. Maybe the old age is finally getting me too...
