88 Bayliner Capri 24.5 foot Sunbridge
OMC
COBRA OUTDRIVE
350 GM
600CFM eldebrock

Just cruising at low speed and then "BAM" the foward gear blew? I think its the lower unit. It goes into gear reverse but not forward on any adjustment?

QUESTION: How hard for a beginner to change out the gears or is it better for a professional to do it? What should be the basic cost for replacment? Any suggestions...thanks all.

Definetly the lower unit is where to start.

As for the beginner, you need some special tools to do the job. i'd say leave that one to a Pro.

Personally, I'd be looking for a lower on Ebay or a salvage yard. Then I would be checking out your shift cable and adjustments.

Re: FORWARD BAD- REVERSE GOOD?

I just replaced my lower unit on a mercruiser. Part was genuine mercruiser and ran about $1900 with shipping. This was brand new. Rebuilts are less, and you will get some money back for your core, if it is rebuildbale.

Re: FORWARD BAD- REVERSE GOOD?

Thank you for the feedback. I did go out this morning and attempted to take down the lower unit and pulled it down 3 inches and found out that I had to also take out the upper unit to release the shaft. Live and learn! Off to a Marine Shop, TOO BAD OKLAHOMA CITY IS lacking quaility workmanship....
