Hi,
This should be an easy one for somebody.
I need to remove the control lever etc from the a forward Merc Control (1978 model)on a 5.7L 260HP Mercruiser. This is the control with the push button in the centre of the unit which allows the engine to be rev'd in neutral. Any tricks to dismantling the unit would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks very much.

Krill,

I'm going to be watching responses here because I've got the exact same set-up and I want to replace/repair mine.

Are you planning to replace the control arm or the entire assembly?

Do you have photos? Will you post photos of your work? :)

Thanks!

Re: Forward Controls Removal

Me, too. I really hate the way mine works. It's almost impossible to pull back the throttle without dropping 500 rpm or more. I realize that can be a cable adjustment at the transom, but haven't had time to look at it. But my throttle control seems loose anyway, and just feels cheap all the way around.

Re: Forward Controls Removal

Snailman,

I worked out how to reove it. Move the lever forward unil you can see a hole appear towards the back of the controls. That hole give you access to an allen key bolt which when removed allows the lever to come off. Then three screws removes the rest of the assembly. Im keeping the old lever assemble but giving it a good clean up.

Good luck

Krill -

Please let us know how this works out. How do you plan to do the cleaning (solvent, penetrating oil, elbow grease, ...)?

Thanks.

Steve
