Forward is Reverse and Reverse is Forward

Recently (2 days ago) bought a used (very used) boat, 1975 Glastron 15 ft. with a 1973 Evinrude 70 HP. Solid boat and motor runs good, that is, until you put it in gear to back off the trailer. 2 things occur, the gears are backwards (reverse is forward and forward is reverse) and once a load is put on it, it dies. The individual I bought it from (yes, a dealer) just this last week replaced the lower unit. I did get it to somewhat run in the water, in gear, after bumping up the idle. The motor runs great with a hose hooked to it and even in the water without being in gear. Is there a simple fix I can make to this thing or does it need to go back to where I got it. It was pretty much an "as is" deal and with what I see from initial outing, I really don't want to deal with this guy too much.. Could this possibly be an incorrect lower unit he has put on it? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe you could mount the motor on the bow to correct the directional problem :) ?

Seriously, take it back if the throttle is rigged backwards. That's a pretty bad omen and I don't even know how you could do it (unless he installed the clutch gears backwards?). The rest of your problems sound equally dubious on a motor that old. A reputable dealer should not sell you a motor in that condition without disclosure.

Re: Forward is Reverse and Reverse is Forward

I'm betting that your dealer mismatched the lower units. If it's indeed a 70hp (first year was 1974) and it's an early one, it may have originally had a Hydromechanical shifting lower unit. This unit was intermediate between the electro shifts made prior to that and the straight mechanicals made after that. It worked well, but had a different shifting throw than the straight mechanical. If your dealer installed the wrong lower unit, he'll need to also replace the shifting bellcrank and some of the shift linkage to make the later unit work on your earlier motor...
- Scott

Re: Forward is Reverse and Reverse is Forward

Thanks for the help, come to find the motor is a 1975. Is there a way you can tell a difference in the units when they are mounted to the motor. Are there any model numbers to look for to match a motor to a lower unit to ensure you are getting the correct one. I am towing this thing back to the dealer tomorrow and with the info I have already gotten I can at least talk like I know something. Thanks again!!!
