I HAVE A 1976 9.9 EVINRUDE THAT I THOUGHT NEEDED THE CARB TUNED OR I MIGHT OF HAD A BAD FUEL PUMP OR EVEN A BAD COIL. IT DID'NT RUN AT ALL UNTIL A MEMBER FROM THIS SITE HELPED ME OUT. I DUMPED MY GAS TWO TIMES. PUT FIVE GALLONS OF GAS AND 13 OUNCES OF OIL. AFTER GIVING UP. I TOOK IT TO A WELL RESPECTED REPAIR SHOP. THERES BEEN A FEW DIFFERANT PLUGS RECOMMENDED. I'VE TRIED THEM ALL. THEY CALLED ME TODAY, I'M EXPECTING THIS HUGE BILL. BUT IT WAS ONLY $45.60. I ASKED WHAT WAS WRONG. THEY TOLD ME I HAD THE WRONG PLUGS IN IT. I FORGOT AT THE TIME TO ASK WHAT PLUG THEY HAD INSTALLED. I'M PUZZLED, HOW COULD THIS BE WHEN THE LAST PLUG I HAD IN IT WAS M40FFX RECOMMENDED BY STAMPERS MARINE?

Re: fouled plugs (MANY OF THEM)

According to my book the correct plug is a Champion UL18C, NGK BR7HS or AC R41CF. I like NGK in most engines but have found that in many JohnRudes Champion is the best plug.

Gregs,
THe correct plug is the UL81C I have seen some champions foul when the carb was messed up or a weak coil. What plugs did you have in there? the 1974-76 evinrude and johnson 9.9/15's use a points and condenser type ignition. If you use the L77JC4 plugs which the newer high energy systems use they foul RIGHT AWAY... post back and let us know what plugs they put in and which ones you had in.

Good luck glad it worked out...

Re: fouled plugs (MANY OF THEM)

THATS EXACTLY WHAT I HAD IN THERE AT THE TIME I TOOK IT TO THEM. (L77JC4) I WOULD NEVER OF THOUGHT THIS PLUG THING WAS SO DIFFICULT. I HAD ONE GUY AT A ONE SHOP REALLY GET UGLY WHEN I ASK HIM FOR A CHAMPION. JOE REEVES FROM THIS SIGHT RECOMENDED THE CHAMPION J6C. WOODY WAS THIS GUYS NAME, REPLIED WHAT THE **** YOU WANT A CHAMPION FOR. AND CONTINUED TO SAY THAT ANYBODY THAT KNEW ANYTHING ABOUT OUTBOURDS WOULD NEVER RECOMEND A CHAMPION. HE GAVE ME AN A/C M40FFX. I HAVE FOULED THEM ALL. ANOTHER MARINA GAVE ME A CHAMPION RJ14YC. I'M GOING TO TRY AND FIND THIS UL81C. IT ORIGINALLY CALLED FOR AN L7J BACK IN 1976. I THOUGHT THAT ALL I HAD TO DO WAS TELL THE GUY BEHIND THE COUNTER THAT, HE WOULD LOOK IN A CROSS REFERANCE AND I WOULD BE RUNNING LIKE A CADILAC. NOT THE CASE. DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY TIMES I HAD THE CARB OFF THINKING I HAD A FUEL PROBLEM.

Since I also used to foul plugs I thught I would jump in. First, I noticed that two Listings for champ Plugs UL18c and Ul81c Whicj one should I be looking for? I will tell ya what realy helped my fouling problem the oil brand. I would just buy some 2cy oil at the convinence store (picture of outboard on it) until I was told by the rude dealer only to use oil made by one of the engine makers and also to use a higher grade of gas this sure has helped

Re: fouled plugs (MANY OF THEM)

Greg Good luck and be sure and tell us if you find sucess. I have a 1975 15 HP Johnson which is same motor with a different carb. I have the factory repair manual and the owners manual and they both say Champ LJ7. I went to a good auto parts shop and they crossed it to a Champ RL82C now a 874 for the Resistor plug, or a L82C now a 811 for the non resistor plug. Plug one heat range hotter is a L86C and two heat ranges hotter is a L90C now a 896 that crosses to a autolite 425. My motor has been doing same thing since the TCW-3 oil has come out.
One thing to check is the Thermostat. Mine was stuck open where the motor never got up to temp and plug fouling was real bad at that point. Also at some time after 1975 omc redesigned the head to help with this problem. I only use my motor for trolling and only way I have got it to stop fouling pougs is to cut oil to 75 to one. I think my problem may be worn rings. If you find a fix let me know. I am ordering rings soon.

Re: fouled plugs (MANY OF THEM)

I am not sure, but the AC plug was recommended at one time, there was a service bulletin. Found the bulletin SB 2004 dated July 1980.

The recommended sparkplug at that time was champion UL81J gapped at .030. There is a later bulletin that I don,t have.

Re: fouled plugs (MANY OF THEM)

ok guys heres the deal, i can't pick this motor up until this friday so i e-mailed them and asked the plug type. this was there reply. they said that this particular year and brand motor does not have one of the strongest ignition systems. so they have installed an NGK B7HS. they said they put it on the water and tested it and i was good to go. well every plug was good to go for about 30 to 45 minutes. so we will see.
