Plugs can be fouled by various things. Most commonly it is carbon (which conducts electricity and shorts them out) and oil (which doesn't conduct electricity but can get in the way of a weak spark and when it burns leads to more carbon, which...). Technically they could be cleaned. Mechanics in the old days would sand blast them but then they found that the sand was clinging to the plugs and getting into sensitive engine areas, not good. Before unleaded gas lead salts would sometimes melt (melted salt conducts electricity) and would short them out. <br /><br />BOTTOM LINE= plugs are cheap-buy new ones, gap them correctly, and keep a few new spares on board.
