two weeks ago i found a boat that had sunken about a month ago,my friend and i raised the boat and got her afloat she was still in good shape so we hauled her in and took her home we tried to find out who to talk to about the boat and our rights as to keeping the boat any help or legal advice let me know

Try the marine division of your Sheriffs department, and go from there. I am not sure the maritime salvage laws apply to lakes and such, but you never know.

You can probably establish onwership under an abandoned-or-adrift state regulation. That's how I got my runabout. <br /><br />However, you will probably have to prove that you researched the boat's ID and tried to contact (registered mail) the last known owner. I also had to run a newspaper ad.<br /><br />Having pictures of the boat looking like a salvaged wreck also helped get my title application approved.

Just curiuos what lake did you find this boat at? And what kind of boat is it?

Do it by the numbers with whatever Police authority has jurisdiction over the area and you will save yourself a lot of potential trouble. "Salvage Rights" is one of the most misunderstood areas of marine law. Report it and let them tell you the procedures you have to follow. Get some paperwork establishing that you have done this. Jason and Jack have the right way to go about it. Not sure about AR but in Texas it become abandoned property and as such now belongs to the state and has to be turned in to the local law enforcement to be sold at auction. There are no marine salvage right in inland waters in Texas so check with your local law enforcement agency. Always be sure and keep notes on who you talked to, what was said and when.
