Found a surprise while re-packing wheel bearings

Replaced all 8 wheel bearings and races. Found this on the last wheel.

Packed a lot of wheel bearings, but never seen anything like that...I blame the French... (see photo)

Looks like a case of poor quality in the metallurgy department. Also whoever installed the bearing was not paying attention! Probably broke off while hammering it onto spindle......over heat-treated. What brand??

Brand was "made in China" . Feel like I got lucky finding it in my driveway vs on the highway.

At first I thought that was one of your old bearings, Wow, lucky you caught that!

The country of origin is irrelevant. Put the blame on the U.S. trailer manufacturer who probably out sourced the cheapest bearings he could fine.

have you taken a real close look at the wheel and rim that was on that hub, it looks like a side impact damage to me

Yes wheel was inspected and is fine. New tires were put on as well.

You was very lucky in this one, you looks like you hit something very hard to so the 1st bb get that bad. Check your hub and spindles

Hubs were removed and inspected. New races and bearing were installed. The axles/spindles look fine. I have put about 200 miles on the trailer since repair.
