French Left implodes after defeat

Emma-Kate Symons, Paris
May 08, 2007

THE French Left began imploding as soon as the official results showing Segolene Royal's resounding defeat were released yesterday.
The Socialists sank into an abyss of bitter public recriminations and soul-searching about their failure to modernise and unite France.

Not since Francois Mitterrand completed his second term in 1995 after 14 years as president, has the Left ruled at the Elysee Palace.

Note that they actually do call their left wing party "socialists"? I found that strange.

This ought to be good, watching the riots, when all the welfare is taken away from the slackers.

But Royal had so much better looking legs.

I do suspect that when you read about Nicolas Sarkozi's platform, you will be sorely tempted to think that he is very similar to America's liberals and you might even think of him as just another social democratic European.
Rest assured,he is far removed from the American idea of republican or conservative.

The French realized that a huge number of their citizens were leaving the country to work in England because of the mandated Fench 35 hour work week. It was getting tougher and tougher to get ahead living in France.

Some are calling this an actual revolution. At the very minimum, it is a total repudiation of Socialism, by an otherwise free society. I might also add that it's waves will resound on the shores of Amurica. IMHO, it gives notice to the party of Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, rolmops, PW and Blu Lunch. Oh heck, I forgot CJY and WillyB.;)

I don't know if I would go that far. Definitely a more pro-American government though. Time will tell.

It's the direction rolmops. A slide, if you will, back up the slippery slope that they have been sliding down for these last 40-50 years. Hmmmm? Where else have I encountered this?:p

I do suspect that Rolmops has not read Sarkozy's(not Sarkozi's) platform!

He is for doing away with inheritance tax on small and medium estates.

He is for cutting the number of public sector workers.

He is for scaling back immigration

He is for making overtime pay tax-free to encourage people to work more.

He is for overhauling France's welfare system.

France takes a step towards freedom and we will see how close we can come to communism in the next election. Two slopes, in opposite direction.

A wonderful pipe-dream -- but then, there is reality.
Some are calling him A "Thatcherite"

ex: He also pledged to reduce taxes, shrink the size of government and shut down redundant government programs.

Carrying out these reforms will be an uphill battle, but Sarkozy believes that France is ready for a change. The French have lost faith in work, he says. "Reviving the work ethic is at the heart of my program."

Werk?? Hmmm... Don't sound like no maggot-infested bum socialist (with pretty legs) :)carrying a handfull of rocks to me.

Time will tell what this really means.

The pendulum swings one way, and then it swings another, then it swings back again. It is what pendulums do.

Oh, they'll notice, but will only care if their constituitents notice. Americans are too stupid to read the newspaper. If it's not on American Idol they'll never find out.
