This motor is a 55EL76E which I am going to assume is an electric shift motor. The plug from the powerhead is a yellow plug. The lower unit is a manual shift and the controls are a red plug controller. There are a few issues, one being the motor will not turn off with the key. There is continuity from the black/yellow wire to ground with the switch off just before the red plug, but not through the connector to the black/yellow on the power pack.

The black/yellow goes to the top big post on the yellow connector, the one right at the arrow. That post on the red plug connector is open, hence the switch not working. I could not find a post in the red connector that was connected to the black/yellow wire.

I think I'll just cut the wire before the red connector and run it up to the black/yellow where it comes out of the box. This should give me the connection I need to shut the engine off with the key. I'll test the black/yellow coming out of the box to see if grounding it will kill the engine before I start splicing. I will also put some sort of connector in the line close to the big plugs so I can unhook the motor if I need to in the future.

My question to you guys is, does this seem like a reasonable fix for this problem and what if anything should I be looking out for on the e-shift motor switched over to a manual lower unit. The linkage all looks OK, not all scabbed together like you might see on some bad conversion. The motor shifts smoothly and quietly.

One thing I've noticed is that the fast idle doesn't seem to open the throttle or advance the timing as much as others I've had or seen. The motor starts OK although I've only had it out once so far.
