Re: Free 411

We have had 411 here for around a year now. It is a good service, road reports, weather reports, directory assistance, and local events and locations. It has been and still is free in this area.

Good info, thanks!

Fwiw, in 2006 everyone’s cell phone info (name, number, etc) will be listed in a new cell phone directory, to be available/accessed online only, not in print.

Verizon is not participating in the directory listings, citing privacy concerns for its customers. Cingular, T-mobile, Sprint/Nextel, and others will be publishing their customer’s info.

My understanding is that if you don't want to be in the listing you need to contact your cell phone service provider and opt out.

Also note: it is not legal in America for marketing companies to call cell phone numbers unless they have prior permission to do so.

From snopes.com:
"Six national wireless companies (AllTel, AT&T Wireless, Cingular, Nextel, Sprint PCS, and T-Mobile) have banded together and hired Qsent, Inc. to produce a Wireless 411 service. Their goal is to pool their listings to create a comprehensive directory of cell phone customer names and phone numbers that would be made available to directory assistance providers."

It goes on to say, "The Wireless 411 service would be strictly "opt-in" — that is, wireless customers will be included in the directory only if they specifically request to be added. The phone numbers of wireless customers who do nothing will not be included, those who choose to be listed can have their numbers removed from the directory if they change their minds, and there is no charge for requesting to be included or choosing not to be included. That's old Snopes. Note that ATT is no more, Nextel and Sprint are now joined. What I heard was on the Fox News channel a couple days ago. Take your pick.
