Is it a good idea to put engine in gear before tailoring, to prevent prop free spinning?

Re: Free spinning prop

Think of it this way: When the engine is running, even in neutral, both forward and reverse gears are driven by the pinion. SO: What is a couple of extra revolutions from wind pressure while trailering?

Do what ever makes you feel best--the lower unit doesn't care.

Well you should leave it in gear. That way the chances of ripping the transmission apart when you forget to raise the foot will increase.. Just joking.....it makes no difference.

free spinning is actually a good thing because it confirms everything is well lubricated and has little to no resistance.

its not like a car transmission that overheats if towed in neutral for long time, an outboards gearbox is different and there are no abrasive pads or discs that wear and build up heat like a car transmition

I'm pretty sure either omc or mercury say to put it in gear, I've never bothered but I'd do it if I was going to tow a long way at high speed. (If I remembered)

Heck....leave it in neutral and use a cheap bungee cord if you are concerned.......... if anyone asks about the bungee ......tell them that's the way you mounted your prop so it would not fall off :D

Better yet tell them the bungee cord is there to hold the sterndrive on.

The issue I see when leaving the boat is gear is the hour I will spend trying to figure out why the boat won't start when I am trying to take it off the trailer only to realize that the boat is in gear.....

Re: Free spinning prop

If we truely wanted to get nit-picky, tis better to roll than lay still while trailering.

Reasoning is the shaft is softer than the roller bearing in the propshaft carrier. Vibration of the assy with the shaft still can cause bearing hammering to form pockets in the shaft.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

The O/B gearcase parts are submerged in oil, totally lubed.

Auto manual transmissions have a low oil level bby design, and are lubed by the 'splash' of the rotating gears, no gear rotation, no lube. Trailering these allows the mainshaft to turn dry, thus damaged from a lack of lube.
