Hello, If replacing a freeze plug will any plug do, or does a marine environment necessitate brass material. Not sure what is best. application is a 305 mercruiser

Brass is best for marine. You can find marine application plugs at Jegs and/or Summit Racing for about $10 to $15 + shipping.

Oreillys, autozone, napa, carquest, etc all carry brass core plugs

However if the core plug was pushed out, you may have a cracked block

A question to ask is why does the original core plug need to be replaced? Did it pop out . . . from freezing?
