I just discovered the engine froze this winter. We had a really bad freezethis year and it was the 1st year I tried to winterize my boat myself. Guess I didn't do a good job. I found a cap like plug that had come out of the side of the motor. I have a 1976 mercruiser 120.

The question is can I reinstall this cap with a rubber mallet or do I have to do something else? I don't see any cracks in the block.

Thanks

Re: Freeze

You would do better to replace the plug with a new plug (they are commonally refered to as freeze plugs) Automotive ones are available at ANY parts house (I'm not sure if marine applications use a different type plug or not). Take the old one with you to size the replacement by. When installing them I always put some silicone on the rim of the new plug and use a socket that matches the outter edge of the plug and tap it home (If you distort it or install it too cocked replace it with another new one and try again....They are cheep). Check the exhaust manifold for cracks too.

Re: Freeze

Also... after you have replaced the freeze plug you would be smart not to run the engine hard. Run it for a few minutes, shut it down, and then look for other leaks. Then run it a while longer and look for problems while it is running.
After you've done this then you might take her out for a short cruise.... keeping an eye on the Temp gauge.

Re: Freeze

Buy brass freeze plugs. They are the best for boat use.
