Hi again all, I am helping a friend with his 1990 mercruiser 4.3, he bought the boat with a cracked block due to freezing and we are looking into getting him a heat exchanger set up from boat bandits, can anyone give me any info on fresh water cooling systems, I don?t know how well they work, I always run out boards so this is all way new to me and it?s his first boat.

Thank you all again

They're great with good antifreeze and you forget to winterize, can save your engine. I wouldn't ad one to an already raw water system though, as you can get rust scale and block your heat exchanger but on a new system it's recomended. IMO

Re: fresh water cooling system

I have it on my 90 4.3L,,,works great for me.
must for me since I boat in salt water occasionally.
easy winterization.
Atin freeze in the enclosed system, will protect the engine from freezing + corrosion build-up.

He's right adding a closed system to a 20yr old you are gonna have rust and scale break loose and clog the heat exchanger. but if you are persistant, you could try chemicals to clean and clean again. untill you trust there are no more deposits that could break loose and cause issues. and there are diagrams in the manuals that will show the correct routing for the plumbing..
Let us know how it goes..

Thank you all for your input, we are putting in a brand spanking new engine so we should be clean and clear, does anyone know who makes a good system or are they all about the same, we were looking at one that mounted to the stringers in front of the engine but we noticed a bunch that mounted on the engine its self, we liked the lower one it did not clutter the engine as much, thank you all again

True, but you could crack the heat exchanger though.....

You still have to "winterize" but then it only means draining the heat exchanger, oil/PS coolers and maybe the raw water pump (in a Bravo) of any pooled raw water......

Re: fresh water cooling system

We are looking at what I think is referred to as a half system that only cools the block, sounds like a great add on just don?t want to ruin a brand new engine trying to cover all the bases before we try here on the water, thanks

why? ya wanna change exhaust manifolds in the future? whatever kit you go for should only be another $150 or so for full cooling. in fact you can get the full Monitor kit i have for $700 from Dolphin Marine.
