Fresh Water Flush

I just got word from my dealer that my spanky new Yamaha 150 is on the back of my boat. It is equipped with a fresh water flush system but my docks do not have fresh water within reach of my slip. Should I start stamping my feet now at the dockmaster or is fresh water flushing not that critical ??

Yes, and if that doesn't work whine and snivel. Last resort is to lie on the floor and kick and scream.

Good luck. :)

How far are you from the water tap? Will a roll up hose on a reel help? I believe a fresh water flush every time goes a long way towards preserving the motor. If you really want to go the extra mile, flush w/ salt away, or a like product. I use it every time I run the engine, the stuff works, I even spray my fishing reels w/ it. JMHO Joe

Mine is in salt water March thru November, sometimes December, all day all night day after day. Run a hose to it Gary, it only takes a few minutes.

If stomping, kicking and screaming doesn't work, moon him. Then carry a 5 gal pail of water down to the boat and plumb your recirc baitwell pump or saltwater rise pump to do the freshwater. Then you can rinse the boat down too.

Flushing is a waste of time if you are in fresh water but a necessity for long life if you are in salt.

Re: Fresh Water Flush

How many gallons do you guys think it would take to adequately flush the engine? I know the more the better, but could you get away with 5? 10? 15? It would be easy enough to rig a gravity fed hose to the flush attachment, if it was a "reasonable" amount of water required. There are portable shower things that could probably be adapted to a garden hose fitting - or I also believe you could find a fitting to put directly into the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket, that would connect to a garden hose. I've seen showers set up this way in remote cabins. Just a thought - if its just a matter of hauling 15 gallons of fresh water, it would be no big deal once the system is set up.

There's this little trick I learnt from a Boat Fishing mag. You fill a 4/5 gallon drum with water, fit it with a short hose and muffs. Now this can be used to start up the outboard while the boat is still on the trailer on top of the ramp, if something's wrong with the outboard, you save yourself the troubles of ,aunching and then retrieving the boat. Generally the water in the drum is good for 10+ mins, I would thought that should be enough to flush the outboard.

Oh boy,,, Seems as though flushing is critical in everyone's opinion. I think I'm about 500 feet from the hose at my docks. That is a lot of reeled up hose to pull. I think it might be easier to buy a house on a lake.

Tell me if I am a genius or a fool please. How about a garden hose connected to a bilge pump dropped into a five gallon bucket of fresh water that I haul up from the spiggot that is about 300 feet away ??

I think your bilge pump and bucket thing should work OK. Not much pressure, but it'll wash the salt water out.

Do you have a fresh water tank on your boat? If so, you can use that as well as the source for your flushing water. If not, it might be a worthwhile addition to your gear. You could easily rig something with a pump and all.

Thinking about your bucket idea...

Why not get one of the 5 gal paint buckets with a watertight lid and a screw cap? Install a bilge pump in there and run the hose and wires through the lid, sealed with a bit of silicone. That way, you could fill the bucket and get it to your boat without worrying about spilling. In fact, you could fill the darn thing before you go to your mooring and not have to mess with it when you get back, all worn out and ready to go home.

Your very own portable flush system.
