How would I convert a fresh water houseboat to a salt water houseboat? What would I need to put on the railing and outside of the houseboat to keep it from corroding and getting ruined? Is there a way to convert a houseboat to be used in both fresh water and salt water?

Brian, Since you got no replys, here goes.

In salt water, Steel, Zamak, nickle plated steel and galvanized steel will corrode. You need to substitite brass, copper, chrome plated brass of stainless steel. Make sure your running gear has zinc anodes, to protect the aluminum parts. Also, hopefully your hull is not aluminum.

You will need to use bottom paint on all underwater components. Use ablative paint for the hull, since it cuts down on buildup. All aluminum components should be painted well and then coated with antifouling paint for aluminum. Double or triple the amount of times you lubricate components, and spray the engine and other metal components with "anti corrosion" spray.

If you have a sterndrive, be aware that the cast iron manifolds and risers will not last forever. Check them every year after five years.

Once you have converted the boat to salt water, there is nothing necessary to run it in freshwater.

How long do you plan on running in salt water? If for short periods you don't need to do anything other than rinse it off & flush the motor.

Been runnin in salt for over 30 yrs & it is not that big a deal.

What kind of engines are you running? If they are inboards or stern drives then I would convert to closed cooling. It decreases the amount of salt water exposure internally.
