from 19 to 17

hello.
ihave a 23` 220 DR "deck boat" from stingray (2006). and i was having a hard time getting out of the hole and pulling skiers out of the water.

they replaced my 19 pitch prop with a 17 prop. is this good. what can i expect?,
lower RPM?, lower top speed?, quicker get go?, etc.

does stainless steel make that big of a difference relative to aluminum?

1st boat so please forgive the ignorance.

Not an expert but:
She will get out of the hole a lot quicker rpm will be up
Don't exceed wot max reccomended rpm.
Speed may be down it depends where your speed and rpm were at before.
Generally stainless is more efficient and usually you need to drop in pitch when going from aluminum to stainless.Stainless is heavier and tougher and can be harder on the drive train especially if you hit something.

I would like to reiterate a point above - watch that your RPM's at wide open throttle do not exceed the mfgr's recommended RPM.

Stainless is more efficient and most boaters that care about this eventually go stainless.

Aluminum props will flex slightly on take off thereby slightly decreasing the pitch and aiding hole-shot. SS props don't do this and is one reason to drop pitch slightly when making the change.

That can be looked at in 2 ways...SS is more efficient and often times has more lift allowing greater speeds and more RPM due to less contact area in the water.
So depending on the application, sometimes it's best to stay with the same pitch.

What pitch do you reccomend starting with on a 89' 19' bayliner with 89' 125 Force no idea what was on it before; the prop is wore out bad.


Getting the boat tomorrow ill take some pics and post them hopefully someone can aid me a bit on a little work.

Lotta varbiales to consider for an answer. Best bet is to buy your prop where you can test props till you get what you want. You may pay a couple hundred bucks for that opportunity, but that's money well spent to get it right the first time. Me, I've bought 4 props so far and still not sure I'm where I want to be.

For a SWAG, since all this is subjective anyway, a 13 ( ) x 17P would be a good place to start if you can't borry them. I think you are at about a 2:1 on that Force gearbox. The Hustler is a good, cheap, high performance (for alum) alum prop. If you goof, you can keep the $30 plastic hub we are talking about and just buy a different shell. Works out to about $100 initially and $70 per shell to get it right. You can buy it right here.

Now if you want to spend some money you can play that game in the HiPerf SS props the guys talk about on here.
