Frozen Control Cables

My Control cables on my 89' 30hp Evinrude seem to be frozen, its really hard to shift. I have a single lever side mount type with 4 screws that hold a plate and the two cables held inside with a litlle cottor pin. My first thought is to just replace the cables with new ones but a co-worker suggested that I take apart the cables and hang them at a slope(ceiling to floor) and use this stuff called "Liquid Wrench" and pour or squirt it through the cables for about a week to loosen them up. I'm wondering if any of you folks out there have done this type of repair with success or is this a waste of my time? After looking on each end of the cable there dos'nt seem to be a way to squirt any thing??

Re: Frozen Control Cables

You can lubricate the cables, but I'd suggest tri-flow or something similar over liquid wrench. You'll also need a little gadget you attach to the end to get the lube into the cable. Almost any motorcycle shop will have one.

Probably a better idea to just replace the cable though IMHO.

Control cables are just like steering cables, when they bugger up, take them off, throw them in the bin and buy new ones, you are only buying a small amount of time by fooling around with them, and you will get frustrated with them in a very short time, and end up replacing them anyway, do it now!!!
