I have a 1982 Merc 4 cyl (Twin carbs). It is running fine at the moment, but I have heard that these motors, can "Run lean" in 1 carb and burn pistons etc.
How would I know when it starts running lean ?
I don't want to start pulling carbs apart and panicking about a problem that isn't there.
I know that if the plugs are very light colourd and dry, then it could be running lean, but is there any other way to tell by performance or sound of motor, and is there any quick way to adjust the mix without totally putting the idle out of whack.

It has been my own experience that a motor that is running lean, will actually start running smoother and faster right before it blows.

If you keep you motor maintained, and keep the carbs clean, you will likely not have that problem.

Thanx Admiral.. :D
But doesn't this apply to ALL engines.
When they are Boat, chainsaw, car 2 or 4 stroke?
If the mixture is lean, you get pre-ingintion and white plugs and hot running temp followed by damage ??

Nathan

What I mean is..
Is it specifically 2 stroke multi carb Merc OB motors that can EXPLODE by not keeping the carbs clean ?
Or can any motor run lean an burn pistons..
