Fuel backflow from engine-side fuel connector- leaking etc. Evinrude '72 50hp

Hadn't had the fuel line hooked up in a while, decided to crank the engine on today. Hooked up the fuel connector at the engine and when I started pumping the bulb, fuel started leaking from the line at the connector junction. It should be noted that fuel was also flowing into the filter, so it was working for the most part.
When I disconnected the line, there was a backflow of fuel coming from the male (engine) end out of the filter. I don't recall this happening in the past. Is this normal? Is the problem likely at the male end or female (hose) end?

Suggestions?

Thank you

You can replace the O-ring in the hose connecter.---Most folks opt for a new connecter for an instant fix.

A new o-ring or connector will fix the leak. However, it should be noted in reference to the rest of your question, fuel running out the engine side when disconnected is perfectly normal. Gravity, y'know. If it really bugs you that much, you can spring for the bucks to buy a new style engine side connector. They have been redesigned with a valve to prevent that back flow. They aren't cheap.

EDIT: I just looked it up, the new style engine side connector is part number 0393334. $51.01. I think I could stand a dribble. Perhaps a rag to catch it.....

The oring is part number 331380. Supercedes to 334913. about $ 2.00 The real problem is that if it's leaking fuel-it is also leaking air into the fuel system when running. That can cause a lean condition-not good for a 2-stroke outboard.

Yeah I think I can stand a little dribble here and there for that kind of money. Glad it's a regular thing, really didn't want to have to find a new engine connector. The new connector should be in my box sometime this week so hopefully problem solved. Nice weather here, time to hit the h2o!
Thanks for all the research and tips.
