Fuel bulb won't firm up

Hi Gang, I have had an issue with the fuel bulb not firming up when pumping it. The motor would still start, but last year I replaced the bulb and fuel lines. Issue didn't go away. Motor still starting though until recently when it turns over good, but won't start. I read a post that said it probably was a bad diaphragm in the fuel pump. Today I removed the fuel pump and opened it up. I've included pix, but I see no tears or issues. The fuel filter seems good too. I'm going to replace the fuel filter and spark plugs, but was looking for ideas on what might be the problem. The motor is a 1995 Force 70hp outboard. Thanks!

For fuel related problems, clear in line fuel filter between the pump outlet and the carb inlet is very helpful. When priming you should see fuel pouring into the fuel filter and indicates if the primer bulb is actually working.

When idling, check the clear fuel filter and again if the fuel pump is working properly you will see the clear fuel filter filling up.

If you see bubbles getting into the clear fuel filter, while priming, it tells you there is a leak allowing air to get in.

If you do not see the clear fuel filter filling up while priming, then the primer bulb check valve is not working properly.

If the primer bulb is priming and you can see fuel filling in the clear fuel filter, but not getting firm, then you should start seeing fuel overflowing from the carb. If not, then it indicates the primer bulb check valve are not working properly under back pressure.

If you already have clear fuel filter installed, then use the above to make a diagnosis.

Thanks Jiggz, I had gone to town and got a new filter, gasline hose and spark plugs. I replaced all the hoses from the bulb to the carb.I put the fuel pump back in and pumped the bulb took a while but the bulb firmed up though there was some gas coming out of the carb. Motor fired right up and again after a couple 20 minute shutdowns. Is the gas leaking from the carb after the initial pump up a problem? It didn't appear to leak anything after that.

Was the motor on full vertical when you were priming? If not, then gas will naturally leak at the carb. If it is on full vertical, and the gas leak continues, then an adjustment of the float might have to be made. Otherwise, you should be OK.

Remember, bulb getting firm not hard, as it will not. Also if you continue to prime after it's already firm, yes there is a very good chance fuel will overflow at the carb.

Soft squeezie: the squeezie has a 1 way valve, it could be bad?
Some work better when in a vertical position or maybe laying flat.
New bulbs can be bad right from the box.(tempo), had 3 in a row bad out of the box.

The older carb'd motors can leak fuel for no reason.

It was trimmed up so I think that explains the leaking. Thanks!!
