Fuel dripping out of carbs when tilted

I have a 1982 90 hp merc 6 cyl that I have only owned for a few months. Yesterday I had it out for a run and it ran great. When I got home with it I noticed fuel had just started to trickle out of the head of the motor.

I removed the cover and could see fuel dripping out of all 3 carburetors. I tilted the engine back/down and the dripping stopped. When I tilted the engine forward it started dripping again. Is this normal or is something wrong. It has never done this before.

Thanks for any help.

Brad.

If you don't run the carbs dry the will spill gas when tilted, it's like a full glass of water if you tilt it the water will over flow.

If you close the vent on the gas tank when you tilt it up and transport it, the splashing gas will build up pressure and keep flowing fuel to the leaking carbs.

Disconnect the bayonet and run em dry (at idle, don't get carried away) when you trailer the boat, and it'll stay dry.

hope it helps

Re: Fuel dripping out of carbs when tilted

Thanks very much for your help. The idea about the splashing gas certainly makes sense that this could volatize gas in the tank if the vent is closed which could cause enough pressure to push gas out the carbs.

It was also a very hot day yesterday which I supposed could cause even more pressure to build in the tank while traveling.

Thanks again.

Brad.
