Fuel Filter

1990 MerCruiser 3.0. I have had a inline fuel/water filter separator in place for a long time. Change it every season. Now I heard from a mechanic that the block filter in the fuel pump can be degraded by Ethanol and gunk up the Carb(not fuel injected). Can I just take the block filter out of the fuel pump and rely on the filter screen in the Carb and the Inline fuel/water separator filter?
