I am new to boating. I just got a 1989 Thompson I/O, 95hp 18' boat. It doesnt have a fuel filter and I need to get one, but cant find anything on what type it needs. It has a bell shape housing in which it is to fit. Can someone point me in the right direction. Thanks

Re: Fuel Filter

Hit the local NAPA and put a see through filter on the fuel line anywhere it will fit and remain safe. They are cheap and replacable.

Bob

Re: Fuel Filter

Sailor, I will guess that you have one of those GM "porous stone"-type filters, mounted on the top of the mechanical fuel pump. If you visit the dealership for the I/O you have (Mercruiser, OMC or Volvo), they can look up the part for you. Alternatively, if you take the housing to your local auto parts store, they may be able to match up the filter.

Re: Fuel Filter

A water seperating fuel filter is almost a must have on a boat. They should be installed on the suction side before the fuel pump. But DO NOT get a filter with a clear bowl, those are for outboards and are not Coast Guard approved for use in an inclosed engine compartment.
