I have this new to me 1996 VP 4.3gs that I'm getting familiar with and setting up for spring. Replacing the fuel line from tank and some fittings. There are no fuel filters currently. Is it advisable to have some sort of filter between the tank and pump or something before the carb to protect the carb? I'm used to my ol' force where I had a cartridge filter between the fuel pump and carbs and fuel/water separator between the tank and pump and did anything in oils to keep those carbs clean. Don't see much about this on these motors. Should I be getting some filters installed? If so any recommendations on what to install and where?
Thanks as always

Re: Fuel Filters

hey there should be a filter on the bottom of your fuel pump , jest loosen the bolt that holds the steel bowl on and remove the v shaped clamp

Re: Fuel Filters

The Volvos usually come with a water/fuel seperating filter.
It looks like an oil filter.Maybe under the fuel pump on that model?
Any more letters after the 4.3GS
Mabe a 4.3GSJLKD or something like that?
They made 17 different models that start with GS.
I think most of them used the same fuel delivery system?

Re: Fuel Filters

It's either in the bowl under the fuel pump or a separate screw on filter looks like an oil filter as mentioned.

Re: Fuel Filters

Thanks guys... @jerry it's a 4.3GS PNCA. I'll check for it in the bowl on the pump. There's definitely no seperate fuel water separator filter screw on type that I can see anywhere. That's why I'm asking if I should install one?

Re: Fuel Filters

On my 4.3GL the fuel filter is located at the front starboard side of the engine, under the fuel pump, as shown:

although that particular picture has FWC so the fuel pump is not located directly above it.

The VP store parts catalog shows the same filter for a 4.3GSPNCA, part #16 in the below diagram

Re: Fuel Filters

Yeah just readin through my manual, it says all models except 1995 3.0 are equipped with a spin on canister type fuel filter. Don't know how I missed it, but could swear I didn't see one. Now I'm second guessing and will take another look around as soon as it warms up a bit outside. Maybe the PO took it off but don't see why that would be. Oh well will look more closely and install if it's not there. Thanks for info as usual. Very helpful! :)

Further, mines the 5.0GL and my fuel filter/separator is located in the lower front Port side of the engine. I'm betting yours is on there somewhere?
