Fuel Gage not working

I replaced my fuel gage on Johnson 150 with new one. Only reads half full and never seems to do anything. What is the troubleshooting process for this. PS 1988 proline cc.

I would check the float in the fuel tank and the ground connection. I had the same problem last summer, but the gauge was not bad it just had a bad ground. My fuel gauge grounded on the fuel tank next to the fuel sending unit. Good Luck
