Fuel Gauge pegs at full when I turn the key on

It goes from empty to past full actually when I click to key prior to start. Have two wires going to the float assembly. I pulled the float and she looks ok. Tried to get resistance readings when I raised and lowered the float by hand. Hard to tell exact readings but it look slike they were changing as I did it (seemed very erratic though-maybe it was the way I was doing it).

Anyway - does this sound like a float problem or the actual gauge itself? How can I test it? Thanks people....

Well , see if the gauge still pegs with the sending unit unhooked and wires capped, if it does then you'll have to wring out the wiring, because something is grounding out. If it doesn't then your float sending unit is grounding out (short in the resistance winding) you did say the resistance was jumping around when you manually raise the float, I would think it should be smooth and proportional.

Check the wire connections at the gauge. Mine did that yesterday and I found a wire at the gauge has become disconnected. Plugged it back in and it was fixed.

Re: Fuel Gauge pegs at full when I turn the key on

I had a similar problem. My fuel gauge was reading fine empty up to about half a tank, anything over and the gauge would peg to full even with 3/4 tank of gas. I pulled my float, hook it up, turned on the key and moved the float by hand. Sure enough as I moved the float from empty to full the pin would peg full at about halfway. I replaced the float and the gauge now reads perfect. Visually inspecting the float it looked fine, but obviously something was wrong internally.

May not be your issue though. If I recall with the wires disconnected I don't think I got a reading on the gauge with the key turned but I am not a 100% sure. The float kit was only $30 and worth replacing just for the seal and piece of mind regardless.
