Fuel gauge wiring

Howdy! I've learned a lot from lurking in this group. Hope you can help me out here...

I recently purchased a used 16' bowrider. Most of the accessories didn't work (any gauges related to the motor DO work, i.e. oil level and water.) But, no lights, no horn, no bilge pump. Seems that anything controlled by a switch didn't work.

Immediately I thought of fuses. You won't BELIEVE where this fuse panel was! Anyway, the fuses were fine. I suspect there is a system-wide electrical problem buried somewhere in the miles of wire I see.

Being a DIY sort of guy, I set out to rewire a few essential accessories. So here's what I did:

Ran new wire from the bilge pump to the switch. Put a marine fuse in-line. Completed the circuit from the switch to the battery. I completely circumvented the ignition switch, so the thing will run even without the key on, which doesn't bother me. It seems to work fine. I did the same for my lights, and they work fine. Does it sound like this is a workable way to do the wiring?

Now, my boat has a fuel gauge that I'd love to get going. Integrating the wiring to the ignition switch seems daunting to me. I'd like to wire it the same way I did the bilge pump, and simply flip a switch to put power to the gauge to see what the gas level is. Is that possible? How would the wiring go? With gasoline being involved, I don't want to do something stupid...

TIA! jthor

Re: Fuel gauge wiring

sure it's possible.. if that's what you want.. it's your boat..

on the gauge there's a terminal that says ign.. that's to ignition switch.. so it only comes on when the switch is on..
wire it to your toggle switch instead...

also in your rewirin' don't just rely on crimp connections . they fail & turn corordy & green in time .. a boats worse nitemare...

solder A L L . CONNECTIONS..!!
even if you have to cut off the little plastic red/blue/yellow thingys on the crimps.. ( i buy them plasticless)..

also you should do it all rite..and do it with ' TINNED ' marine wire .. regular wire 'WICKS ' up the corody's.. sometimes
feet up the wire..

do it rite.. good luck..

Re: Fuel gauge wiring

Thanks, crab bait. Is the - post on the battery a "good" ground? That's where I've grounded everything else.

So there will be 3 wires coming from the fuel gauge? I'm trying to picture where they all go...with the bilge pump, I did:

* red from pump to switch (with fuse in-line)
* from other post on switch to + on battery
* from battery - to black on pump

Same sort of thing with the gauge? Thanks for your patience...
