Fuel Guage Not Working 1988 Invader

My fuel gauge for my 1988 Invader Boat reads either all the full or when I took it out the needle went to E. I tapped and went back to full. Is my gauge defective? What is the best way to try to figure this out? Thanks for the Help!

If you can get to the sender on the Tank, remove sender wire from Tank and with the key in the ON position, ground the sender wire. Gauge should go to fuel! If so, sender is probably bad. If not, new Gauge is in order!
