fuel gunk

Hi Every One:

I have A 1954 seahorse 5.5 that was given to me about 18 or 20 years ago.

I was in a barn, and a friend asked if I wanted it. I thought, " sure, I'll take it to the junk yard for you."

Any way I took it home, and removed the shroud. I was packed tight with a mouse nest.

I removed all the crap, and the thing did not look too bad, so I thought what the hey!

The motor had been in the barn when my friend bought the place about 13 years prior to when he gave it too me.

I put on a couple of new coils, and spark plugs. About $60.00 at the time, that I really could not afford. A used tank, another 50.00. Stuck in a pail of water in the back yard, crossed my fingers, and pulled.

Three pulls ,and it farted. 5 and it caught. 7 or 8 and it ran smooth.

What luck.

About 15 years ago I pulled the line off the recoil. last year 2008, I put a new one on. I had to replace the fuel tank lines, and that is about as far as I got.

This is a really long winded account, I just wanted to give you a little history. Here is my Question.

I have had the motor on the boat three times this year. A record for me.

On Saturday, I put it on, choked it, and nothing.

I purged the tank, repressuized, and nothing. when I again loosened the cap, I pumped it with the cap off, and it was still pressurized.

I disconnected it from motor, and reconnected it slowly. All this gunk, like honey started to come out of the line. I did that maybe 20 times over my old bailing can. Till the fuel started to come clear.

Was that the "Varnish" I have been reading about?
If so can I expect a replay some time in the future? What do you think might cause it from the tank?

Sorry this is so long.

Thanks for any help.
