Re: fuel injection

I was a volvo auto tech for 9 years. back when volvos were still good cars, with the b230 engine. after working on them for a while i figured out the only way those cars could have been more dependable is if they had carborators. Why would you want to make your boat less dependable?

I think but not sure Holley makes a injection unit for 4cyl engines. And Volvo car injection is crap, I owned my first and last Volvo car in the same rig. But their marine products are great. 'nutcase

Re: fuel injection

any way to put fuel injection on a 4cyl volvo

There is no easy way to do this. Of course we don't know which engine you have. Is it a volvo engine or a chevy engine. I know those old volvos w/o a choke can be a little hard to start when cold, but if it is the chevy, they all had chokes and should be easier.

As for the fuel mileage increase, unless you idle ALOT, you will not see a noticable difference. And certainly never enough recover the cost of the conversion, if you can figure out a way to do it.

Re: fuel injection

If it's the AQ151C in your signature, easiest way to do it would be to use a TBI (throttle body injection) off any car of approximately equal displacement. Use a Megasquirt controller (Volvo examples here: http://www.msruns.com/viewforum.php?f=100)

and develop your fuel map to fit your boat.

You'd have to machine a custom manifold adapter, it woudn't be any kind of Coast Guard approved, you'll probably burn up a couple of motors developing the fuel map, and you'll undoubtedly put your eye out.

Weber makes a replacement carb for the Aq151. I put one on mine and it ran great. It comes with a replacement intake manifold and carb. the carb has a choke so it makes starting alot easier.

HAHA! I laughed out loud reading that. I'm dying to know how you can lose an eye installing a fuel injector.

BigBad,

Aside from going to FI, is there any way you can fashion a choke on the existing carb or just hunt down a used carb from a newer model?

You would have to burn a lot of gas to make the cost worth it in fuel savings. A little like buying solar for an average house in my mind.

Re: fuel injection

The fuel map is not the injector...but a computer run mixture curve.
Too lean and BAM...backfire through the air intake or throttle body...
I play with fuel curve maps on my VTX all the time....;)

Did i teach Lowkee anything? :D

That makes sense. All I could picture was some spring popping out and popping you in the eye. Which didn't seem very likely, but was nonetheless a funny mental video ;)
