fuel issue

I have a 1986 murcury classic fifty 45 HP. The motor will start fine and run at slow speed fine onec you give it gas and get the boat out of the water it will start cutting out after 30 to 60 seconds but the motor will run and never stall. It is running just like the motor is starving for fuel but if you back off to idel for a few seconds and give it throttle it will run and then start doing the same thing. If you pump the ball just lightly it will run all day as long as you are pumping the ball.

I cleaned out the carbs and lines and it ran for two weeks but it started doing the same thing so I rebuilt the carbs, new filters, new gas line from tank to motor, new fiting on motor, drained tank and let it dry out.

This motor has carbs with the fuel pump built into the carbs so I have no other parts to check.

Any information would be helpfull.
thanks

Re: fuel issue

If you have a induction tach ch for spark if the high speed winding is out on the stator it can act like that. You can also ck the stator with a DVA or OHM meter

Re: fuel issue

thanks for the reply, what is a induction tach? If the problem could be with the stator (i am going to check it today) why would it run ok when the ball is pumped.

the best way to explain is you give 3/4 throttle more or less anything faster than no wake speed and the boat is going fine and after the 30 to 60 seconds it is like taking the throttle from idel to 1/2 over and over.

I have a seloc service book so I am going to test it today.

thank you

Re: fuel issue

Zapped, I didn't see the part about pumping the bulb. If thats the case you have a fuel pump or vacume leak problem, ck the f/pump ck valves and the various fuel line connedtions
