Fuel Issue?

I have an '88 60 hp Johnson. My dad ran it (with water) once a year in his yard for 4 years, disconnected the fuel line and let the motor run itself dry, then stored it under cover. I can get it started but it wants to shut down. I can maintain a medium idle with the idle lever. In the water, I have to keep the keyed choke in to operate at high speed-if not the motor stops running. I replaced the fuel filter. removed the (3) carb drain screws and goo came out. I sprayed carb cleaner throughout and the fuel seems clean thru the drains. Fresh 87 Octane fuel, fresh oil in tank, fresh fuel filter. hmmmm. seems to run right at high throttle with the choke constantly pushed in--kinda hard to steer doing that all of the time. when the motor is running slow to medium I have to constantly, quickly, push the keyed choke in to keep her running, if I keep it in she will die. Can anyone offer some advice to me? Thanks guys, gofish (Nick).

Time to remove the carbs and clean and install kits.

Carb kit 18-7042 and Needle and seat 18-7093. You can get these parts thru NAPA

Sorry no directions.. Its really simple if you take your time and clean everything real good with carb cleaner.

Re: Fuel Issue?

See if this helps.
1. Begin by removing the float assembly. Push the small pivot pin that holds it in place out through the holder in the carb body. On some units, the needle will lift outof the needle-valve assembly as you remove the float.

2. Remove all traces of gaskets used in the carb assembly.

3. Remove any screws on side-cover plates.

4. For general cleaning, you should not need to remove the jets.

5. You can begin spraying with the carb and choke cleaner.

This are just general steps, it may differ depending on what type of carb you have hope this helps. :)

Hey Trent and Medic1529P :

Thanks a heap for your welcome help with regard to my outboard problem.
Trent, you nailed it on the head--YUK! the fast needle valve on the mid and lower carb were completely clogged with dried oil.
Medic1529P- your instructions were a great help as well. I follwed them to the tee and had absolutely no problems. Not bad .
Anyway, thanks for taking the time to help a perfect stranger who knew nothing about this stuff. With your invaluable assistance my outboard starts first time, every time, and runs like a dream.
Regards,
Nick White ;) :) :)
