Fuel Leak at sender unit? UPDATE

While trying to start the engine on muffs today it would not start. I inspected the engine compartment and noticed fuel odor and fuel leakage around the gasket of the sender unit located on the gas tank. I had inspected the bilge area prior to attempting to start and didn;'t smell or see anything. I replaced this sender unit two yrs. ago and it never leaked up till now. It was leaking around the gasket and from 2 of the screws. These screws were loosened and while retightening them I heard a burping in the gas overflow tube and fuel spurted out the spout on the outside of the transom.

Any ideas what caused this condition?
Should I replace the entire sender unit or is there a gasket I can buy?

Thanks.

Re: Fuel Leak at sender unit?

Since your boat is a 1985, I would check the condition of the tank itself. My 1986 tank was full of pinholes. I had it "fixed" at a shop and it seemed fine until I put fuel in it and another pinhole opened up. Instead of taking it back for another repair, I decided to replace it with a new one.

I also had to replace the fill and vent hose because they were turning into powder.

If everything checks out, a new sending unit gasket should fix you up like Don said.

Replaced the gasket today, old one looked a little worn around the edge. Took forever to line up those darn screws! Do the screws have their own gasket or o-rings on a Tempo Universal fuel sender unit? Mine had something on the screws but it was too chewed up to use again. Can I replace it with some other gasket material? Or does the pressure of the screw on the round aluminum plate pushing against the gasket underneath make the seal? I am getting paranoid about gas fumes now.
