I have a 1979 Mariner 140 HP. This is my first boat to ever own, bought it last year and it had been sitting up for a few years and the tank and the carb's. were all gunked up. I have cleaned the tank, rebuilt all of the carbs and took the boat out last fall and had it running great. Let it sit up for the winter and just got it back out to start working on the inside of the boat. Last week I cranked it in the yard on a hose and it ran fine. got my seat in and was going to take my kids out for a ride. I stopped and got gas, when I got to the lake it would not start. As it turn out the gas had water in it. Used a another tank and got the boat started this past Sat. in the yard on the hose and it ran pretty good. Went to the lake Sunday and it would not start, I think I flooded it. I noticed Sunday that Carb # 2 was squirting gas out of the brass fitting, loke the float wasn't doing it job. pulled the boat back home and put it back on the battery charge and it cranked that night. I have went out and hit the key and started it for minute every afternoon this week. Today when I got off work, picked up a timing light and was going to check the timing. The boat started and ran for a few seconds and I killed it. Connect the water line so I could run it to check the timing. The thing would not start, it was flooded again. Pulled the covers off of it and gas was running out of the front of the # 2 carb. and squirting out of the brass fitting. I know the float isn't work on that carb. Is there a way to clean it with out breaking it down? After i rebuilt the carb's last fall I had no leaks at all and din't have any until I pulled about a 250 mile round trip last week.

This boat was sitting up for a few year and and when it would not start last week, I sprayed carb. cleaner in the holes trouble shooting until I discovered the gas was bad. Can the floats go bad? Should I buy new floats and put in the carb's? Could it be that one float is weak and the fuel pressure is push it down? Any idea's from you guys that have had boat for a while.

I did get it started tonight and it was running like crap and squirting gas out of carb # 2, I pulled the fuel line and when the flooding stopped the motor started running good and I ran all of the gas out of the carb's. with the carb's dry now can I try to clean it with some carb cleaner to see if I have some trash in the needle and set on that one carb?

I just don't want to do anything that will hurt the engine or the carb's.

Thanks in advance for you input.

Improperly set float(find proper setting by looking in your manual or online at say boats.net), seating needle valve or if gas "sprays" out of the carb while running, check those reeds(reed valves). All should be flat against stop surface.

Pulled carb. # 2 float cover and didn't find any trash that could be stopping the needle from seating. Checked the setting at that point and they were correct. I looked at the float and the spring on the top of it was slightly bent. Adjusted the spring on the float and that corrected the problem.

Thanks for the input. Problem solved, will try to take the boys out again this afternoon.
