Fuel Line Check Valve

Engine is a 1986 140hp Mercruiser I/O. Had a no start issue on Sunday. After checking gas and spark it was apparent that the carb wasn't gettting fuel from the supply line. Put in a new fuel pump early 2010 so I was pretty sure that wasn't the problem.

Turns out there was an aluminum check valve on the tank supply line that had failed after 25yrs. I guess it was sticking from wear. I know because I replaced it with a regular 1/4in NPT - 3/8" OD barb with no check valve it worked just fine.

My question is: Will negating the check valve effect the engine in any way? I assume it is there to prevent fuel flow back to the tank from supply line and a hard start but I had it out for 4 hours on Monday and it ran fine. Re-started a bunch with no issues. Fired up immediately. Was this check valve a nice to have or is this a necessity I should be looking to replace?? Seems to me it was just something else there waiting to fail.

Re: Fuel Line Check Valve

It may have been an anti-siphon valve.
If the line should spring a leak, without it, fuel can just pour out, the anti-siphon valve allows fuel to be 'drawn' out or sucked out by the pump.

Thanks Fishbone. That makes sense. I suppose that's what it was.

They are cheap and they are a safety item. I'd just put on a new one.
