Hey everyone,
I have a 1977 70 hp johnson, runs absolutely great in the driveway, but bogs down in the water, I am rebuilding the carbs, I have ordered new bowls for the carbs because I can not remove the high speed jets, i have also ordered a new fuel pump. My question is at the connection for the fuel line at the engine when I clip in the hose, it clicks solid, but seems to have a bit of a wobble, and looks like there may be a few drops of fuel there. Should there be an exterior rubber grommet? My compression check gave me the following is this good? #1 - 119, #2 - 120, #3 - 120.

thanks for all imput

oh, and by the way on looking over the engine I had a badly rusted ground that lead into the powerpack. (possible problem?)

I dunno about the carb thing but ground on powerpacks is kinda critical.

Compression is good. As long as they are above 100 and all within 10% of each other.

Do you see drops emerge when you squeeze the bulb? The supply line has an O-ring that seals onto the brass stem. Mine doesn't have a gromett on the engine side and it wobbles a tiny bit.

Those connection do wobble sometimes. If you're running off of a single line that stays connected all the time it won't hurt to eleminate that connection and run the fuel line direct to the fuel pump.

thanks everyone for the great information. I am only using one line so the idea of running it directly to the fuel pump interest me. I think this to be the best Idea as this will eliminate the possibility of a air leak as well.

Any ideas on the ground wire that I replaced, could that of been causing the engine to bog down?

seriously doubt the ground was the problem, it would either work or not work. 99% of bogging problems are either carbs, or link n sinc, which is the coordination of the spark advance and carb advance. your compression #s are great. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=244013
