Fuel Line on a 60hp Johnson

I just had my 60hp Johnson rebuilt. I have ran it about 3 hours. The middle cylinder wall is now grooved again and compression is low. The mechanic said the fuel line allowed too much fuel to go to the engine. The fuel line is a brand new one that I bought at Wal-Mart for an OMC/Johnson motor. Is it possible that the fuel line caused the problem?

Re: Fuel Line on a 60hp Johnson

Jughead,
Hi and welcome to the forum.
I imagine you are going to get many replies on this topic.
OMC fuel line = 3/8" usually.
Path of fuel to motor: Fuel tank to fuel line to primerbulb to fuel line to hopefully an inline filter to fuel pump to carburetor(s) to motor.
Too big of a fuel line may cause insufficient fuel pressure. Pump fills the carburetor bowls. Carburetor should regulate how much fuel is entering the motor, NOT THE FUEL LINE. Too much fuel in the motor would flood the motor and cause it to not run correctly, too little would cause it to starve and not run correctly.
Possible causes of scratches: Poor repair and assembly, insufficient oil in fuel mixture causing lack of lubrication, timing set wrong causing binding and or pre-detonation and blowing 1 or more rings, overheating and numerous other possibilities.
Hopefully you got a warrantee with this rebuild.

Yes I did get a warranty. That is why the mechanic is trying to get the problem outside the motor. I am very mechanically challenged. The mechanic is trying to get the problem outside the motor so he won't have to honor his warranty.

Many of the members on this board are actual marine mechanics. I am not. Wait for their comments. What was his suggestion for the fuel line scenario?

I don't see him again until Saturday. I will find out for sure then why he thinks the fuel line is the problem.

You did not mention the model number of the motor, but depending on what it is, there are several service bulletins about the 60-70hp motors cooling modifications. One concerns timing and jet changes. If you are using an authorized dealer, he has access to this information.

Unless it's a lean carb problem, most cooling problems affect #2 cylinder.
