I am in the process of buying a 2452 Bayliner and I have the choice of one with either engine 5.0 or 5.7. What fuel mileage can I expect from a 2452 Bayliner with 5.0 or 5.7 engine?

gallons per mile. all dependent on throttle position, load, wind speed, etc.

boattest.com usually has real world fuel testing. the reports used to be free, now you pay for them.

I don't have any specifics, but consider the following: (Generally speaking)

1. The larger engine will not have to work as hard. Possibly better economy.
2. The larger engine will have better resale value.
3. Carbureted vs. EFI? I would go EFI if it is a choice. If you are looking at a 220 HP EFI 5.0 and a carb'd 220 HP 5.7, I would go with the EFI.

Are they both mpi or Carb?

The mpi 5.0 is 260 HP same as the carved 5.7. The 5.7 mpi is 300

There you go, a good comparison. In the 260 HP class, I would go EFI (5.0).

If you can afford the upgrade, the 300 HP EFI (5.7) would be a great choice. Just because you have the extra HP does not mean you are going to use it all the time. If you do, the fuel economy will suffer.

That is not a small boat, you may appreciate the extra power.

Welcome to iboats. That's kind of a 'new boater' question. Will this be your first boat?

You can expect to use app 10-12 gph at 3200 rpm (mid-20's mph). Either engine will consume roughly the same amount of fuel. Pick the one with the most HP. The 2452 is boxy (has a lot of sail area) and generally the 5.7 would be the better choice, unless the 5.0 is injected and the 5.7 is not.

Easy choice. Get the 5.7 and get a duo prop too if you have that choice as well.

If you are really worried that much about fuel consumption, buy a sailboat! :)

Bigger is always better! If fuel is a concern buy a smaller boat. Kayaks burn zero.....

I don't think the larger motor will burn more fuel as much as how you treat the throttle. With that said if one is MPI and the other is carb go for the MPI.

I agree i don't think that there would be a significant difference in fuel consumption, normally id go with the larger engine but people say mpi is the way to go. Also not to be rude at all but if you have to worry about fuel that much then you probably can't afford to use it as much as u want to, that's what everyone told me when i got mine and its true. We have a 20ft bayliner w 5.7 and only have about a 2 mi ride to get to the sandbar we play at so i throw 5 gallons in every trip and keep it half full. But its nothing to burn 20-25 gal of gas tubing, skiing, cruising etc even in the little bow rider, ur looking at a much bigger heavier boat. good luck
