I have an '85 85hp force
I've been running 50 to 1, but the exhaust sure is smoky. I've only been running in a bucket so it'll probably be less noticeable when in motion, but i don't want to foul up the cylinders.

does anyone know the correct mix?

50:1 is the correct mix and yes, these engines are smokey at idle.

They are pretty old technology and so tend to idle rich which I think is one the reasons they last so long - rich mixture is good for 2 strokes - lean mixture kills them fast.

When I'm out on the lake at cruise the smoke isn't noticeable - but as soon as I idle down to enter the marina it starts. But the idle is beautiful and smooth so I'm leaving it as it is.

If you want a less smokey engine then you'll need to switch to a new model with EFI or a 4 stroke.

Mine is the same... smokey at idle. Really smokey if its been awhile since it ran. Smokes bairly after 10-15 minutes of running across the lake.

When I got my boat out of storage this year I ran it in a tub. After I got it started, I revved it to 4000 rpms, looked back and I couldn't see the motor from all the smoke. Out on the water you won't even notice any smoke.
