I was servicing our families 1984 johnson 25hp engine this past week. New plugs, water pump, carb rebuild etc. I dug out the old owners manual to look up lubrication points I may have missed. While reading the manual I noticed that the manufacturer recomends that engine to be operated at 100:1 fuel mix ratio (8oz to 6 gallons = 1% mix) I have never seen a marine engine that listed a 100:1 fuel oil mix ratio. They have been running this engine for 27 years at 50:1 without any issues. At this point in the life of this engine, I don't think we should change.

Any Thoughts?

Re: fuel mix ratio ?

There is a thread down a ways where someone mentioned that OMC reccomended a 100:1 ratio for a bit, but it has since been returned back to 50:1, even on those engines it was reccomended.

50:1 is the correct mix OMC sent out a Service Bulletin around 1988 telling owners to only use 50:1 that 100:1 was not acceptable that the engines were not lasting.

That 100:1 recommendation made by OMC was quickly taken back by them and never appeared again. Then manual should have been updated at the time of the recall which removed the 100:1 stickers off of the motor.
