I have a evinrude Big twin 40hp 1963 I believe #40353 D? #E02235 # off the cylinder. My question is on the engine it says to add 1 qt. of 30 weight oil to 6 gallons of gas. That was back in 1963 but now with the twc 3 oils out now should I decrese the mix to like 36 to 1. I have been told it was ok to do that but I would like your idea on this. The plugs are a little dark but it does not smoke at all for the age. Compresion is at 100 lbs. per cylinder.
.

Re: Fuel Mix

Jerry ,I recommend you stay with the original mix ratio and use the TCW3 oil.Not completely sure on your model, but have heard that pre 1964 motors were equipped with sleeve type bearings and require the richer oil ratio.

Re: Fuel Mix

I agree with OB. OMC recommended a 24:1 mix for your engine.

Some are running and will recommend 50:1. They obviously get away with it, but we cannot recommend something that is contrary to manufacturers recommendations.

If you use a leaner mix than 24:1, you assume all risk.

Good luck. :)

Re: Fuel Mix

Jerry, I got this from a 50 year evinrude dealer
Though a little vague 50:1 back to 1960
on larger motors that use roller bearings
E/J 18hp and above. If a person is not sure about
the bearings his or her motor uses stick with the original rec. mix. always use tcw3 rated oil.
