I just bought a 1978 21 ft reinell cuddy with an OMC 240 and OMC 800 out drive. The first time out it ran great. The second time out it would stall while in gear and under load. I can run it at idel and at any RPM without a problem but when I throttle all the way up it will run for a minute then try to stall out like it is not getting gas. I have drained the old gas out, replaced the carb with a brand new one changed the filter and had a new fuel pump put on it. This has not solved anything. Could this be something in the electrical system. I think the alternator is bad and I will replace that. Do you think that or a bad coil might cause this problem any help would be great thanks.

I'd have headed down the same path you did, But.....

Now you have to get to the Basics....
Fuel....
Fire....
Compression.....
All at the Right Time.....

Hard to see how the alternator could cause that. Is the voltage good? Do you have problems starting? If not I wouldn't spend any $ on the charging system, move to ignition (coil, ballast resistor etc)

Sounds like a worn out coil. Also, you should replace your wiring and plugs.

Several things to look for; (1) Make sure spark wires are properly separated. Bundling, while neat, induces cross-firing (2) make sure distributor cap wire insert receptacles are bright clean. Any dirt/corrosion creates resistance to spark travel, will cause spark to jump out anywhere else on less resistant path (3) if 4-bbl carb, make sure secondaries are opening, whether mechanical or vacuum (4)make sure engine compartment is adequately ventilated. heat build-up can cause vapor-lock in fuel lines, even when engine temp gauge shows all's well.
