Hello all. Thanks for all the previous help on this boat of mine...I have a 86 skeeter with a johnson 175 vro.. the vro has been taken off..my question is, how much fuel pressure should i be pumping to my motor.. i had a cheap pump on it when i bought the boat and at high rpms it was sucking it dry. i have replaced the inline pump with a holley high volumn pump that solved all the problems, but it floods it out now because it is pumping to much gas. so i have been to both extremes with this motor. no gas to to much gas. My question is there a cheap way to regulate your fuel pressure and what is the optimum fuel pressure for the motor. I really dont want to buy a 100.00 reg. Any help would be great..

Why didn't you just rebuild or replace the OEM fuel pump? I could be wrong but if you do a survey I bet you won't find many aftermarket fuel pumps on outboards.

shannon,

Electric pumps on outbaords are rare and in many cases deemed illegal and dangerous.

In case of catostrophe, what shuts the fuel off?

I believe that engine (non oil injection) had dual fuel pumps. I also believe the conversion from oil injection to pulse type pumps was quite easily done.

Re: Fuel Pressure for Boat Motor

It had a pulse fuel pump that could not keep up with the volume that the motor needed at high rpms. I took the pulse pump off and put a high volume impeller type pump. I can shut the pump off at the key. My main problem is regulating the fuel. The high volume pump pumps to much fuel and a regulator is 100.00. i was not aware that the motor had a factory fuel pump. i will call my mechanic and see how much they are. Any more answers would be appreciated

shannon,

I think what you may have overlooked in my post was that the V-6's (non oil injected) had DUAL fuel pumps. One cannot keep up.

You say you CAN shut the electric one off, but what happens if the ignition is left on, you are incapacitated and there is a fire? It continues to pump.
