I have a 2005 MX 6.2L MPI with Bravo 3 s/n 0W061713. 885174 comes back as the fuel regulator. Why are these regulators so darn expensive? Can they be cleaned/repaired or should it just be replaced if there is an issue with the regulator?

After verifying whether or not that's the issue, you'd be no worse off to see if you can disassemble and fix it yourself.

Looking at the picture of this regulator, it looks the most that could be done is clean the circular filter screen.

Maybe some O-rings and springs live farther inside. If it is indeed broken, what would you have to lose if you dove in deep?

I just looked up what it looks like.
Looks to be hermetically sealed.
When I read things like "Hermetically sealed. No user-serviceable parts." I take it as a challenge ;)

I may be too late to this thread, but I have pursued non-OEM PRs and I look at a picture of the part number you posted and looks like the one I have. See post #5 of this thread (link) where I present some measurements of the OEM PR and a brand name alternative (BOSCH Part No. 0280160575) that I have been running on since. Cost about $30. Also note about the pressure being regulated eval in post #4.

Edit: I thought I had a lot more measurements than the one posted, but if yours measures the same for that part, if I can find my old files I will post.
