Fuel problem, AGAIN?

Hi guys,

I have a 1991 6 H.P. Evinrude motor, model E6REIA. Had a lot of problems starting it and also trying to get it to idle last season. I rebuilt the carb last year and it helped a lot, but still very hard to start, but ran better.

This year, very, VERY hard to start, and stalls out at low idle. Even after it runs for 15 minutes, (full operating temp.) it will quit and I have to fully choke it to start again. If I do not choke it, I can pull the cord 20 times and it will not start, but when I choke it, it will start on one or two pulls of the cord, then I need to close the choke quickly or it will flood and quit..

I just ordered a new carb rebuild kit again. I am hoping that another rebuild of the carb will help me. Anything else I should try? Good compression and a good spark using a spark tester at 5'16". Good fuel and good fuel pump. Is my problem strictly the carb? Thanks!

Are you draining the fuel system or using a fuel Stabilizer for winter storage?

Checked fuel pump pressure lately?

When you rebuilt the carb last year, did you remove any core plugs on the carb and clean out the passages behind them? What are you using as a Carb Cleaner?

Did you verify the Float is good and set correctly?

it needs to inhale gas to work since you have sparks electricals seemed ok

….if compression is ok you also need crankcase vacum to suck in the gas . assuming vacum is ok and you choke it ...not much else but a dirty carb. upside down float etc...

see pictures… you dont have the glass bowl on the 6hp carb (more modern) but all other issues still need to be checked out

Thanks guys,

Dingbat, The gas I use for my kicker motor is coming from the main tank on my boat. It is under the floor and is 25 gallons. Same mixture as my main outboard. I definately used fuel stabilizer for the winter months and ran both motors in the fall to make sure gas with stabilizer filled carb bowls. I do not know how to check fuel pump pressure.

Jimmbo, When I rebuilt the carb last year, I did not remove core plugs. When my new rebuild kit comes in, I will do that this time around for sure. I do not recall even seeing any of the plugs on my carb. Do they ALL have them? A new float was installed last year and was adjusted properly. I made sure of that.

Crosbyman, How can I tell I have enough crankcase vacuum on the engine? Does starting on one or two pulls as it is in full choke tell me there is vacuum or not? My slow speed needle valve was in like new condition, and I replaced the seat for it last year. Float too was replaced. I do not think there is a high speed setting. Is there?

I will do a much better job this time around on the rebuild. If it still does not run right, time to take her to a good mechanic as I doubt if there are even 200 hours on the old engine.
Thank you.
Will post an update after my rebuild.

put a sheet of paper in front of the carb face while a friend pulls the starter ….do you at least see the sheet being drawn into the carb face… you hand can feel suction ? … it better !

don't forget to clean out the top round plug….under it are 3 small drip holes for the low speed operation
drill a small shallow hole pop it out with a nail clean the chamber and holeswith carb cleaner then seat a new plug in the top and crimp it in tight with a punch and seal with finger nail polish (any color :) )

the top idle circuit is fed by the side channel (see gasket with the hole having no bolt in it ) clean it out and blow out the channel to the top chamber )
