I have an i/o merc 188hp that is hard to start. If I put some gas or starting fluid in the carb, it will fire right up and run fine with no problems. But once it sits for a while it is hard to start again. Where is the source of my problem?

Thanks

Let it sit for a while to create the problem. Now before you start it look down the throat of the carb and get some one to push the throttle, you should see two small streams of gas shoot into the carb. If not I would suspect that the gas is draining out of the float bowl back to the tank. The small check valve in your gas fitting at your carb is faulty or missing.

The check valve is referred to as the needle and seat.

It comes with a carburetor rebuild kit.

Try to avoid starting fluid. The stuff works great ,but its hell engines.I've seen diesel engines trashed using it. I do have some around but only use it once or twice til I get the problem fixed.

Jim
