? fuel problem?

Chrysler 6.6 H.P.outboard, model #601 S# 4073. symptoms: in nutral have full thorttle, in gear have half power. New plugs (2-ice), cleaned carb completly, checked fuel pump *** ., checked all fuel line ball check valves from tank to carb. for blockage, O.K. Next question, - could this be a "clutch" problem? - can a spring work 1/2 way because it's broken? <br />Additional symptoms: seems when in nutral, when advancing the throttle, there's a "pause" at mid range, then sudden acceleration to full throttle, does not follow "flow" from throttle arm. No load - full throttle/ under load - half speed, sounds like only one cyl. is answering, but changed plugs 2-ice, have spark on both. Figured slow on gas somewhere, or something between eng and prop (clutch?). This symptom happened quickly, not a slow down over a period of weeks or months. Figured it's not something wearing, more like a brakage or clog - sudden. Any ideas would be helpful, the engine is clamped on the vise in the garage, haven't been sailing for 2 weeks!

I don't have a manual for you engine but, was the lower spark plug oily versus the top one? If so, and if your engine has a puddle valve, check it to see if it is dirty. Sounds like the same problem I had on my 55.

Re: ? fuel problem?

Lower spark plug oily was my 1st thought. put in 2 new plugs, 2ice,- ruled out fouled plug, when in nutral (no load) have full "throttle", under load have 1/2 "power" - both plugs fire. Still question "clutch" below engine (spring?). That's as far as I can "figure". Either fuel or electrical, - think I'm going down a fuel road, or, drive line from engine to prop. Don't want to take entire outboard appart and rebuild 100%, and not know where I'm going. There must be a reason for these symptions. This came on fast like a light switch, not slooooley like wearing, so think something broke, got plugged, or froze up. Thanks so much for a reply, did not know what to expect! any ideas greatfully accepted - it's gotta make sense before I dig into the situation. The unit is still in the garage mounted on the vise. I'm a good sailor and can get out & into the harbor without an engine, but Kathy (wife) says she won't go! - why do they do that?

One of the easier things you can do is rebuild the carb and fuel pump. I'm assuming that this engine sat around for a while. The fuel and oil settle to make a sticky combination. The rebuild kits are at NAPA for your engine. They are under $30 total. Soak carb body in solvent or gas overnight. Blow out all orifices with compressed air. and reassemble. Have fun.

Thanks scotiany, I'll try that (soaking) and parts. Takled to someone who thinks it could be the clutch, knows snowmobiles but not O/B's. This enging is on my boat every summer, doesn't sit for more than 5-6 months during the winter (in the basement). Motor came with the boat that I bought in '87. Have rebuilt carb w new float, jets, etc. about 5 yrs. ago, never had a problem in the spring, she always fired up on 2-3 pulls. It's on a sailboat and I use for going out of, and into the harbor, so it has not had long hrs. on it.
