Has anyone ran across this problem before---Have a 89 tracker with 110 Johnson. Boat will run fine and plane out smooth but right after it planes it cuts off like it is not getting enough gas. Can back off throttle and let idle for a minute and it will plane out smooth again then cuts off. Been told that fuel line or primer may be collapsing. Any help will sure be appreciated. Thanks in advance

Re: Fuel Problems? ANY HELP

Hi. Definately a fuel starvation problem. Check/replace fuel lines and filters. Also make sure vent on fuel tank is not plugged.

See Mercury service advisor No. 2001-17
Or to make it simple rebuild the fuel pump but use Merc' s kit. It contains new style check valves. The old ones have rubber edges and over time ethanol causes the edges to curl up an not make a good seal. The result is the problem you are having. The kit is cheap an its a pretty easy job.

Had a similar issue when there was a small hole in my fuel fitting at the tank.

Another thing to check, I had a portable tank once where the fuel line in the tank was rotted out and it acted similar to what you're describing.

Thanks Guys--will check these things out when I get back to the cabin. Seems you get one thing working and something else will slip up and bite you. The joys of being a boat owner I guess. Thanks again

Re: Fuel Problems? ANY HELP

Sure sounds like a fuel pickup problem. See if the problem goes away with a full fuel load.....if so, check that the fuel pickup tube hasn't perforated.

Re: Fuel Problems? ANY HELP

I am dealing with the same issue on my boat. Mine is bad fuel, causing the Anti-syphon valve to jam up. I had replaced fuel lines, added a water fuel separator filter, and fresh fuel. The varnish in the tank is causing the issues. I am thinking of mixing B12 with several gallons of fuel as suggested by another Iboater. I figure mix the carb chemical with the fuel, put the boat on the trailer and drive it around the neighborhood a couple times over a weekend, then run the fuel with a filtered recirculation pump set up to try to clean all the impurities out. After that a couple more times around the block, let it slosh around and one more run with the recirculation concoction and then drain it all. Add a full tank of gas, TCW3 oil and run the boat all day with an extra filter for back up. Not sure what else to do.

Need to eliminate the supply side. Seems like too many ideas and no plan ;) Running her from a separate tank straight to the filter seems to be in order. But check out Post #4. My .02.

Are you suggesting take fuel line off existing tank and run it with a temporary tank?

I have an 85 Johnson V4 on my bass boat and one time it did the same thing. Turned out to be clogged jets and a carb rebuild fixed it.

Yes, but don't use the fuel line either. Run fresh line to the temp tank from filter. If it is still happening, you will have eliminated the pick-up, connector, the fuel line, the primer and any anti-syphon valves from your list.

Great to hear your problems are fixed. Not nice to have engine problems on the lake-- a lot worse on the Atlantic..
